📖 Book-to-Film / Book-to-TV Adaptation Reviews

Where an author's words move from the silence of the page to vibrant life on the screen.

Persuasion (1995)
Amanda Root and Ciarán Hinds shine as Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth in this faithful adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion, capturing both the quiet emotional power of the story and the atmosphere of Regency England. Strong performances, careful attention to Austen's dialogue, and gorgeous settings—from bustling Bath to the rugged English coast—make this version one of the finest interpretations of the novel ever filmed.

Persuasion (2022)
Netflix's 2022 adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion offers lavish costumes and attractive locations, but lacks the emotional depth of the classic novel. Modernized dialogue, fourth-wall-breaking humor, and uneven characterizations—especially of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth—undercut the mature tone of Austen's final completed work. Despite a few amusing moments, this glossy retelling ultimately misses the quiet heartbreak and hard-won romance at the heart of the story.

Pride & Prejudice (1995)
The 1995 BBC adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice remains the gold standard of bringing this classic to the screen. Jennifer Ehle is a radiant and spirited Lizzy Bennet, capturing her wit and warmth, while Colin Firth's now-iconic Mr. Darcy transforms from proud and distant to a worthy match. Aside from the unexpected pond scene, this richly detailed production stays wonderfully true to Austen's tale.

Jane Eyre (2006)
The 2006 Masterpiece Theatre adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre comes close to perfection. Ruth Wilson brings depth and quiet intensity to Jane, while Toby Stephens' brooding yet charismatic Rochester captures the character's mercurial nature. Richly atmospheric settings bring the windswept moors vividly to life, making this a deeply faithful and emotional resonant adaptation.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1996)
The 1996 BBC adaptation of Anne Brontë's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall brings the novel's darker themes vividly to life. Tara Fitzgerald is compelling as the secretive Helen, whose quiet strength hides her pain, while Rupert Graves is chilling as her dissolute husband. With Toby Stephens adding warmth as the attentive Mr. Markham, this atmospheric production captures the tale's emotional heft and the stark contrasts between Helen's troubled past and her hard-won refuge on the moors.

North & South (2004)
The BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South is a remarkable example of bringing a beloved novel faithfully to the screen while preserving the spirit of the original. Daniela Denby-Ashe perfectly captures Margaret Hale's intelligence and determination, while Richard Armitage is commanding as the proud and guarded mill owner, John Thornton. With a superb supporting cast and evocative industrial settings, this sweeping four-hour production beautifully conveys the emotional and social tensions at the tale's core.

Headhunters (2011)
The film adaptation of Jo Nesbø's Headhunters is a suspenseful thriller that captures much of the novel's dark energy. Aksel Hennie brings a compelling mix of insecurity and slick confidence to the role of corporate recruiter—and art thief—Roger Brown, while Synnøve Macody Lund and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau round out a strong cast. Though some of the book's psychological detail and narrative surprises are streamlined for the screen, this stylish movie is a thrilling take on Nesbø's story.

The Snowman (2017)
Based on Jo Nesbø's The Snowman, this adaptation had all the ingredients of a gripping Nordic thriller but ultimately falls far short. Despite striking Norwegian locations and an impressive cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, and J.K. Simmons, uneven direction and muddled storytelling leave the film strangely flat and confusing, failing to deliver the chilling suspense that makes the novel so compelling.

Harlan Coben's Stay Close (2021)
Netflix's adaptation of Harlan Coben's Stay Close delivers a gripping thriller built around long-buried secrets and the lives they continue to shape. James Nesbitt shines as the detective, while Cush Jumbo and Richard Armitage bring emotional depth to characters whose past choices refuse to stay hidden. With the luxury of an eight-episode format, this suspenseful miniseries unfolds with steady momentum and proves to be a thoroughly satisfying adaptation.
